The hardest part for me doing an upwind 360 is keeping the sail close. Many times when I go through the eye of the wind into the lee-side-sailing position, I lean the mast into the wind and pick up power and turn the nose off the breeze by pushing out the clew—the sail is an arm’s length away, which doesn’t work for a light-air upwind 360. Keeping the sail close seems to work better for a sail & body 360, too. Stepping first, before you move the sail is essential in both moves.

The Anton Method for the upwind 360 involves sailing lee side for a minute in the middle of the maneuver. This has two advantages: 1) you’re starting the hard part (the jibe half) with the sail already close to you, and 2) it’s easy to move your feet back on the board before you move the sail because you’re sailing along when you move the feet instead of already turning.
