Windsurfing Booms Low for Steerability, High for Smooth Sailing

June 5th, 2008 · No Comments

When we’re setting up our windsurfing kit, we try to find the right balance between booms high so that we can weight them with our harness so as not to bounce and low so that we can steer the board easily.

Both Isabella and I put our booms too high Tuesday–we expected to be powered and booms high is right for powered, but neither of us could steer our windsurfers around the waves as easily as we wanted. Wah!

I put my booms up a half inch Tuesday and I didn’t have the looseness in steering I wanted. (I thought my mast track was farther forward than it was.) Until I talked to Isabella, I was blaming this on the board is was riding, a 78 liter Mistral Score, which for a wave board is not very wavy.

When I rode my Flying Fish board two weeks ago, I set the booms at the same height, but they ended up 1/2 lower (I don’t know how) and the mast track was about a 1/2 inch forward. The booms felt low, but I could maneuver like crazy. I attributed that to my Flying Fish board and the mondo 11″ fin I was riding. Wrong again!

Measure twice, sail once.
