One of the difficulties with windsurfing is that there are a hundred way you can mess up a great day. My windsurfing kit Tuesday, in wind averaging 25 mph, was my rrd 94 liter Free Style Wave board with my Hansen 5.1 square meter wave sail and Flipper 13.5″ fin. At 140 pounds (last I weighed myself) I was POWERED. Everything was smooth and easy–I had my kit perfectly tuned. My buddy Isabella rode her glass board, 4.7 wave sail and a big slotted fin. She’s bigger than me, but she was powered just like she likes.
If I had know it would be so windy when I rigged Tuesday, I would have used my rrd 85 Free Style Wave board, Bash 4.6 sail, and Flipper 12.5″ fin. So Thursday when it was looking to be just as windy, that’s just the kit I put together. I didn’t have nearly as much fun as I did Tuesday. The wind, especially at the start was not quite there. You an see from the charts that the lulls were lullier on Thursday and the wind just wasn’t as smooth. (I did get a great hour, though, when the average went up to 26mph.) Isabella, however, said that her experience was the same or better. Now that’s interesting! Her glass board flies and her 4.7 is more than 1/10 of a meter more powerful than my 4.6.
